Have you ever not done something because of a fear of failure? Has it stopped you from achieving your goals or dreams? I know there are many inspirational quotes we can turn to when self-doubt starts creeping in, such as;
“Success is often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.” Coco Chanel
“Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.”
George Edward Woodberry
“There is no failure except in no longer trying.” Elbert Hubbard
But sometimes an inspirational quote is just not going to cut it. Every entrepreneur will have faced the fear of failure, and of course also failed at some point in their lives. This is a very personal issue and one that cannot be fixed by throwing more time, commitment or money at it. I am constantly telling my daughters to see any fails throughout their lives as a good thing – something that they can learn and grow from. Many times I have asked them, “What is the worst thing that can happen?” I am trying to build in them a confidence and self-belief that will empower them to try anything they want in life – and to hell with the consequences!
I am in a unique position where my business partner is also my twin sister and best friend who is there to pick me up and dust me off when I am allowing my fears to get the better of me. We have a strong support system in place to make sure that when one of us is down the other is feeling strong enough to keep the momentum going. It is a fact, life does get hard, there are days when plans go wrong and you feel like giving up – DON’T DO IT!! I have put some tips together to help you conquer your fears:
Accept That You Will Fail
If it is fear of the unknown that is stopping you let’s just get this one out of the way from the get go. “Fail” is a very broad term so change your perception and try to look at it in a positive way – you learn and grow from every experience in your life.
Identify Your Fear
“Fear of Failure” is all encompassing – so what is it you are really scared of? Is it losing money? What people will think or say about you? Damaging your reputation? Take a moment to establish what is really stopping you from making your dreams a reality, because once you have acknowledged your fear you can deal with it.
Create a Support Network
Surround yourself with people who believe in you and “have got your back”. I believe this is the most crucial element to continuing on your journey when obstacles get in the way. Lean on these people when necessary to keep you focused on your goal and help you stay motivated and positive. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Get Comfortable with being Uncomfortable
Finally you need to understand that achieving your goal is not a destination; but a journey. There is not going to be a point when you can settle in and make yourself at home. You will always feel a little uncomfortable and possibly even scared at what the future may bring – but hey, isn’t that part of the fun?
I encourage you to meet your fears head on and continue on the path to your success. Sure failing at something sucks, but the wins are SO worth it!
