Spring is definitely here which means the Spring Racing Carnival is not too far away. This is always my favourite time of year, I love the color, the fashion, the glamour, the horses and of course the headwear!
Disappointingly there just aren’t enough occasions to wear hats anymore so when the Spring Racing Carnival comes to town, I jump on board. For me it is always about finding the dress first and from there I plan my accessories and the very important hat to bring it all together. It becomes quite a project for me but it is the best feeling when it all works on that special race day.
I generally have a pretty good idea of what I want and as I like to get something “different” I usually enlist the help of my extremely talented milliner, Jill from Jill & Jack Millinery. Jill has been making my amazing headpieces for the last five years and last year she won the Myer Millinery Award.
I admit outfits for the races can get quite expensive but I always try to buy wisely to ensure that my outfit can be re-worked and re-worn at a later date. I generally choose an outfit with clean structured lines but with a feminine twist and add the interest or color with a creative hat or headpiece. Derby Day is one of my favorite days and I bet you can guess why… that’s right…. It is a black and white theme!
Don’t think you can look good at the races without spending a lot of money? Think again! There are so many stylish options in stores and online that are very reasonably priced and if you haven’t noticed it seems right now EVERYTHING is on SALE.
You don’t even have to buy a headpiece. With a little bit of creative flair it is quite easy to whip up something amazing. This year my dress will most likely be the hero of the ensemble so I am thinking a simple bit of netting may do the trick for me. Looks like a trip to Spotlight is on the agenda.
Of course another option for the Spring Racing Carnival or any special events you have coming up this Spring/Summer is to hire your outfit. More and more women are choosing this option because you get the chance to wear a designer label without having to outlay a huge amount of cash for a dress that you may only get one wear out of.
I have recently launched “Borrow my Style” which is a service that provides size 14 – 16 women a chance to hire designer dresses for special occasions such as races, weddings etc. I also have a range of custom made headwear that is available for hire as well so if you are struggling to put together an outfit most of my dresses have a matching headpiece already made. So basically you get a personal styling advice at the same time as hiring your outfit! Visit my instagram account for pictures and prices: borrow_my_style.
